Democracy and truthful illustration ar at the core of Republic government. each member world within the Republic is entitled to a seat within the Galactic Senate and therefore the right to vote on legislation. thanks to the sheer size of the Senate, that represents thousands of worlds, Senators talk over alliances--occasionally through installation deals--to strengthen their position on necessary problems.
Large-scale military deployments should be approved by the Senate. Jedi activities ar formally outside the Senate's jurisdiction; on the side, the Jedi Council prefers to be consonant with the Senate's needs, and avoid a threat to their independence from Senate action.
The head of the Galactic Senate--and thus the Republic itself--is the Supreme Chancellor. The Supreme Chancellor is electoral by the Senate and serves a four-year term. In recent years, campaigns to become Supreme Chancellor became additional and additional low-keyed, as candidates concern assassination by the Empire.
